  • Computer Referral Guru Takes The “Sh … out of your … IT!”

Computer Referral Guru Takes The “Sh … out of your … IT!”

Since joining Caerusnet Ann Arbor back in 2010, Patrick Collins has become known as a kind of Swiss army knife for IT.  He is eager to help with something as simple as replacing a cracked computer laptop screen.  Yet, he also often enters the space of the very sophisticated … like designing, installing and maintaining a company’s sophisticated computer networks.   Mostly, Patrick wants to help people eliminate the frustration they often face in technology and in working with the usual computer geeks who lack “humanness”.  As Patrick often likes to say when he finishes his Member Minute, “I want to take the SH away from your IT.”

We think of Patrick     as an “IT Hero”, as the Washtenaw County residence’s attendance at his Caerusnet Ann Arbor Tuesday 1PM team is Iron-Man like.  Participation is a key to Member success and Patrick is close to 100% attendance every year, set aside the once in a blue moon common cold or his annual pilgrimage to Atlanta for the Dragon Con (just because he doesn’t speak geek, doesn’t mean he isn’t one).

We embraced the opportunity to spend time learning from Patrick in this interview:

How long have you been in your profession?  I’ve been in the Tech industry since 2005, first in wireless and telecom sales and then worked my way onto the IT side of the business. I started Ypsilanti Tech Works in 2010.

How did you get into this field?  I’ve always been a computer geek, all the way back to the mid-eighties when I used to write programs in “Basic” language on our family’s Texas Instruments computer. Along the way, I picked up a degree in computer science and always enjoyed figuring out how and why things worked in a computer or network.

What is the best thing about your business/career? I love that IT is so broad of a field and changing all the time. There will always be something new I can learn, but what really gets me out of bed in the morning is knowing what I do allows my clients to serve their customers and meet their goals.

What is your strategy with your member minute and your spotlight presentation? Being in a technical field, for my Member Minute, I am always trying to make sure I speak in terms of what benefits my services provide to my clients, not the features where my description might go beyond the technical knowledge for members of the group. Early on I learned to recognize the eyes glazed over look of someone whom I’ve lost because they were not as fluent in “techie” as needed to understand what I was talking about, so now if I start seeing that look I know I went too geeky and adjust my Member Minute on the fly or remember to change it up the next meeting. I think about it this way, nobody goes to a baker and cares about the cake’s recipe, they just care about the flavor of the cake and what that cake will bring to the event they are buying it for.  For Spotlight presentations, I either go into more depth about one of my offerings, or educate the group about why a business would need my services. I have a little more time to explain concepts that Members would not understand but just like with my Member Minute, I try to not go over the heads of my audience I try to stick to anecdotes and stories about the benefits of doing business with me (and especially with data security the risks of not implementing the services I am talking about).

Tips on how to be successful in Caerusnet?  I think the most important thing to remember about being successful in Caerusnet is that you have to play the long game (think “relationship farming”). It takes time for the other Members to get to know, like and trust you.  And with each new member that clock starts again. There have been times where the group makeup was not ideal for someone selling B2B IT services, and I would not see many referrals. However, after a few months there would be some turnover and we would add a few Members that passed very good referrals to me.

Could you share an unexpected way in how your Caerusnet members have positively influenced you or your business besides passing referrals?  I have to give thanks to Kevin Suboski and his “Growing a Brilliant Business” program. Not only did his guidance help me better define my business and how to share it with the world, some of the other topics we have discussed since then have really helped me grow as a professional.

  • Would $100,000 In Referrals Help Your Business?

Eric Jones and Chilah Weller started their payroll, time & attendance business, Workforce PayHub, at around the same time they joined Caerusnet.  After many successful years as Members in Washtenaw County, the energetic business duo decided to bring Caerusnet referral teams into their hometown of Adrian, Michigan.  The new Facilitators have found even more referral success and we spent some time with them recently to glean their strategy.

How long have you been in your profession?
Workforce Management Solutions, Inc. was the name of our company when it was separated from Donna Baker CPA & Associates in 2010. In 2014, Eric & I bought in to Workforce and it was renamed Workforce PayHub, Inc.

How did you get into this field?
Eric and I started a bookkeeping company called “Your Financial Solutions” in 2013.  Later that year we decided to offer payroll services and we met with our college professor Donna.  She discussed her vision of offering payroll services and a human resource information system with a more robust platform. Through much discussion we decided that buying into Workforce PayHub made the most sense. Eric and I handle all daily operations.

What is the best thing about your business/career?
We are part of the most important/costly asset to a business which are the employees. Ensuring proper and timely payroll as well as time and attendance and HR technology we are able to assist companies with the entire life cycle of their employees, from hire to retire.  Being part of their business growth is the most rewarding aspect.

What is it about the Caerusnet model that you like most?
It allows us to build personal trusted relationships with people within our community. Meeting 30+ plus times a year with like-minded professionals is exciting. Caerusnet has pretty much raised Eric and I. We were just baby entrepreneurs when we first joined in 2013 and with the help of the relationships we built, we more than tripled our business. Caerusnet taught us how to be fearless networkers and put us face to face with the best in the business.

Can you share a personal referral success story?
Ben Torres, State Farm agent, was the person who introduced us to Caerusnet. He also happened to be our first client. He gave us a chance when we were just getting started with zero referrals to lean on. Because of Ben’s referrals we have closed over $100,000 in reoccurring revenue over the last 5 years. However, the financial gain is only half of what we gained and learned from Ben and other Caerusnet Members, the loyalty that is built in these groups is truly remarkable.

Any tips on learning how to find situations where you can create a referral or invite a visitor?
Ask a lot of questions and understand the pain-points of other people/businesses. If those pain-points include needing more business, wanting to be part of the community, wanting to learn how to effectively network then Caerusnet is the right opportunity for them.

What is your strategy with your Member minute and your spotlight presentation?
Be different, be creative and think outside the box. The best spotlights are those that let the group know who you are, where you come from, why you are passionate about your business.

Tips on how to be successful in Caerusnet?
Be creative in how you deliver information. Try to understand the group and what would reach them best. Maybe it’s props, or music, video or even an 8-minute plank while telling your story. Its important to let the group know you personally. The only way to build trust and loyalty is to be open, honest and sometimes even vulnerable.

Share how your Caerusnet Members have positively influenced you or your business besides passing referrals.
Caerusnet has helped us how to become better public speakers, how to get to the point quickly and position the conversation to be meaningful to the recipient.  A cookie-cutter approach just doesn’t work with networking.  Other Members have built our confidence to effectively network and to seek synergies with other businesses.

What is it about facilitating a referral team that you hope to accomplish, professionally?
We love leading others and promoting their businesses in the local community. To mentor new business owners, as a way of giving back.  Because the group caps out at 30 Members strong, it allows for a more personalized approach to leadership and relationships. You begin to understand the abilities of the Members and can push the right buttons to warm up a lead for them.

  • Caerusnet 2019 MVP Member Movie Celebration Recap Highlight Video

Thank you to those who attended the 2019 Member Movie Celebration last Saturday in Howell and/or the afterglow at 2Fogs!

Here’s a YouTube with some highlights of the event where EVERY MVP’s name is mentioned:

We hope to see you again next year and remember to use your “referral senses” and be a hero to others … just like Spiderman!

    Stay connected,

    Steven Zyskowski
    Chief Referral Officer, Caerusnet Michigan

  • Caerusnet’s OFFICIAL SONG To Commemorate 10 Years in Business

Caerusnet Michigan is proud to announce it has licensed the folk-rock song “The Places We Can Go” from Milwaukee, Wisconsin based recording artist, Kyle Feerick, to commemorate the referral organization’s magical 10th year in business.

Caerusnet founder, Steven Zyskowski, stated “My interpretation is the song can be about how finding your voice, making some noise (having fun) … and working together well with others can take you to the greatest places life has to offer.”  And that’s what Caerusnet founder, Steven Zyskowski, feels Caerusnet referral teams are all about.  “When Members and Facilitators really collaborate, have fun and work together … the sky’s the limit to the place they can go when in comes to increasing their referrals.”

Check out Kyle Feerick’s music video here:

Caerusnet plans to use the song for music branding in its future corporate marketing videos beginning with this short clay-mation intro:

“I am so thankful to the amazing Members and Facilitators in Michigan that I get to be the Chief Referral Officer for.  These people always inspire me to be the best I can be and are some of the best individuals one will ever come to know.”

What’s in store for the next 10 years?   Zyskowski said, “By 2029, I’d love to see Caerusnet as the #1 referral network in Michigan.  I can only do this with the continued support of Michigan Members and Facilitators by growing the team footprint, staying connected.   In other words, it will happen mostly by referral.  With Caerusnet, I can help professional small business people like real estate agents, independent financial advisors and insurance agents develop more referrals for their own business by being a great referral team Facilitator.  This helps bring them into focus in their community as a giver and a connector and generally, referrals will always follow this sort of activity.  Plus, Facilitators get paid to run the meetings and also get to market their own business as a Member of the team for the profession they represent, so it’s a great system with a lot to offer.  I’m confident about our future … after all, we LOVE facilitating relationships!”

  • Eloisa, The Most-Referred-To Text Message Marketer!

Eloisa Underwood has been a successful Caerusnet Member since joining the referral network back in June of 2016.  Her unique business, Perk Pros, which offers text message and loyalty marketing services, is highly referable.  Any business or organization that wants to stay in front of its customers should know about Eloisa’s great product offering!

We had a chance to catch up with Eloisa to discuss her success in Caerusnet and to learn more about her and her company, Perk Pros!

How long have you been in your profession?

I started Perk Pros in January of 2015, so I’m about to finish my 4th year as a small business owner!

How did you get in this field?

As family is our #1 priority, my husband and I wanted to start a business that would make us financially independent and have the opportunity to control our own schedules and spend time with our children. We were looking to invest in a great franchise opportunity and we found this licensing opportunity that became an even better option for us. We control our brand, our level of service, our commitment to our clientele.

The most important thing is we see Perk Pros’ mission as to help our clients get enterprise-level technology that was only available to big box brands. We level the plain field for them to compete against them!

What is the best thing about your business/career?

The satisfaction of seeing Perk Pros have an impact in the local community helping merchants be able to compete with an outstanding marketing system that is used by big companies.

It was not until I found Perk Pros’ system that I saw any options to bring the power of text marketing to a local merchant.

What is it about the Caerusnet model that you like most?

I like that, unlike other referral groups, we get to enjoy a facilitated referral meeting, and I get to focus on my core business. I don’t have to invest any time in fulfilling other tasks and abiding by rules & regulations that feel too restrictive and unable to keep up with!

I also enjoy that we meet for 30 weeks of the year which makes it sufficiently flexible to be able to fit in Trust Builder appointments which is part of being a great team member. This to me is a very realistic commitment towards a referral team that actually makes sense! Caerusnet system takes the stress out of thinking who can cover me in a meeting I’m not able to attend for a business or personal matter.

Share a success story about why giving referrals/bringing visitors is beneficial to you.

When I have given a warm referral, I know that this builds trust with other team members. I like inviting visitors since I’m proud of how different Caerusnet is compared to other referral teams.

I believe we have the best option out there and want to share this approach that has just worked so well for me. Every Visitor is the opportunity for a whole new set of relationships!

Any tips on learning how to find situations where you can create a referral or invite a visitor?

I have found that when visiting my clients, just listening to their comments on what they are working at, what they are struggling with or even just plain asking them if I can help out with anything else, often helps towards learning about a need that may find other team members’ services or product to be precisely what they need.  I make it a priority in making sure my clients know that I’m part of a referral team that may have what they are looking for.

What is your strategy with our member minute and your spotlight presentation?

During my member minute, I try to highlight one of the many features our system has available. For example, our New Birthday Club feature, where we ask subscribers to share with us their birthday. Once we have their birthday month and day in the system, we can send them well wishes or a Happy Birthday reward option to come back so we can participate in the celebration! I can’t think of a single merchant that can’t benefit from this feature.

For my spotlight presentation, I usually use a PowerPoint and bring an example of the backers and new floor stands we are able to use with our merchants so they can visualize how the setup may look for a potential client.

What is your approach to positioning yourself as a resource in the community?

I like my clients to see Perk Pros as a resource that helps bring their way the best service providers within the community.  When talking with them, I find myself now with a mindset of proactively asking about what are they working with to improve in their stores, place of business, etc.

I see that when I refer a fellow Caerusnet team member and they provide an outstanding service/product we both elevate our credibility. I know that when I recommend someone, they are usually looking to excel client’s expectations since they know we both are working towards the same goal of making our clients happy.

Tips on how to be successful in Caerusnet?

    • Establish a team builder meeting at least once a week with a team member, new team members are always happy to be engaged so we can learn more from their businesses as soon as we can.
    • Have the farming mindset and see your team as a valuable resource for services.
    • Once in a while, look at your contacts and see who might be a good fit for a team member.
    • Always be on time to a team builder meeting
    • Set up a follow-up task for each one of the team members in a Team builder meeting.

Share how your Caerusnet members have positively influenced you or your business besides passing referrals.

I feel Caerusnet members have influenced me in being welcomed as part of a team. It’s always nice to know that I have “sales associates” in each and every one of them that can be an extension of me. There’s only so many hours of the day to look out for a good referral!

I’m now able to share the essence of my business in under a minute, that is super helpful! When you’re talking with a busy business owner to engage him towards landing an appointment so he can hear how Perk Pros can be a great fit for them and hire us… that is gold!

I have seen the level of commitment of team members and learn a lot from them every single meeting. Spotlight presentations are always a guarantee that we will learn something new that is always nice to share with potential referrals for them!

  • Chilah Weller DOES PLANKS For Referrals! Watch and learn!

Caerusnet veteran Members Chilah Weller and Eric Jones from Workforce Payhub (payroll, HR, time & attendance) take their Caerusnet referrals seriously.  As a matter of fact, their entire business, was built on referrals.

After being Caerusnet Members for many years, Chilah and Eric decided it made perfect sense for them to open up and Facilitate their own Caerusnet referral team early in 2018 in Adrian where their business is located.  And they are off to a great start with 16 new Members within their first year!

Recently, when it came time for Chilah to be the 10 Minute Spotlight Speaker for her Ann Arbor Tuesday 1PM referral team, Chilah’s creative juices got flowing to make a memorable one.

How do you know when someone appreciates and understands that networking does have the word WORK in it?

It’s when they do an 8 MINUTE PLANK during their Spotlight WHILE STILL PRESENTING TO THE TEAM!

This fun presentation showed other Members she is a team player and willing to work for business and referrals.

If you’d like to contact Chilah, she can be emailed at: [email protected]

  • How is GOLFING alike to REFERRING? 4th Annual Member Golf Outing A Success!

On Friday, September 28th, Caerusnet Members from teams across SE Michigan gathered at The Links of Whitmore Lake for a fun filled day of golf!

While last year’s outing was a HOT day with temps in the mid-90’s … this year’s outing was perfect with temperature in the mid to high 60’s!

BIG thanks AGAIN to Chief-Golf-Outing-Organizer and valued Caerusnet Dexter Member, Mary Frisinger (from Rouff Mortgage Company) for heading up the event!  We also want to thank the many SPONSORS of this event for making it great!  Also, “Team Wendy” featured host of energetic Member volunteers all with great spirit, helping make the 4th annual Caerusnet Member Golf Outing a success.  Special thanks also to Dexter Member Shasta Grifka from Grifka Marketing for the digital marketing support.

As I saw the golfers take off in their carts on this cool September morning  I asked myself the simple question, “How is golfing alike to our referral team meetings?”

Here’s the best answer I came up with …

You have to show up to play the game.  Just like golfing, you can’t win if you don’t show up to play at the regularly scheduled team meetings.  You can’t learn what works if you don’t practice.  Developing a referral mindset (where your customers refer you more often and other area professionals start to learn to refer to you) isn’t an easy game to master, but one well worth the effort.

Caerusnet was created to help US stay connected to the movers and shakers in your community.  We look forward to next year’s golf outing and continuing to grow the Caerusnet footprint in Michigan and beyond.

    Stay connected,

    Signature SZ

    Steven Zyskowski
    President, Caerusnet Michigan

  • Olivia Somsel’s Dialing Up Referrals With Caerusnet517

Olivia Somsel is determined to lead her Caerusnet517 referral team to greatness!  The young and professional full-time real estate agent facilitates a Lansing area Caerusnet team and is helping her Members begin to Master The Art of Referrals.  She’s not one to shy away from a challenge, knowing that personal growth and development are keys to success.   And while Olivia’s husband Eric is a financial advisor, they would both likely agree that one of the best investments one can ever make … is in their own personal development.

How long have you been in your profession and how did you get into this field? This is my 4th year in real estate. I decided to get into the profession as a career when I got married and had to move. With the help of the book, “What Color is Your Parachute?” by Richard Bolles (pictured),  I reviewed what I liked and didn’t like about my job at the time and looked for professions that would fulfill what I liked. Real Estate was one of them. It was risky, but I dove in head first!

What is the best thing about your business/career?  I believe the best thing about my career is helping people and making them happy. I enjoy putting a smile on people’s faces. When a buyer gets so excited that we finally found the home they love and they close on it, their smile makes me happy;  And when a seller finally sells his/her home and gets to move on to their next phase in life, their smile and excitement is contagious!

What is it about the Caerusnet model that you like most? I like the Trust Builder Meetings and relationship aspect of Caerusnet the most. You really develop trust and can get to know people on a personal level. By doing so, you can really touch and change people’s lives for the better.

Share a success story about why giving referrals and bringing visitors to the meeting is beneficial to you. When my husband invited a new mortgage lender I had not yet met to the team meetings I was hesitant because I preferred and was working on getting a different mortgage lender. However, the invite and introduction was well worth it! The lender on our team and I have a great working relationship. He is always out and about promoting Caerusnet517 and inviting visitors! This is very beneficial to Eric (my husband) and I as we cannot be in as many places promoting Caerusnet517 as 3+ people can be. Strong ‘CORE’ Members are very important!

Any tips on learning how to find situations where you can create a referral or invite a visitor? Be out in the community! Go to an event and talk to people. Have the mindset of helping others versus just helping yourself.  When you are out doing business and your clients mentions other needs they have, think “who do I know that can address this need?”

What is your strategy with your Member Minute and your Spotlight Presentation?  My strategy with the Member Minute and spotlight presentation is to change it up once in a while. Yes, be consistent in a way that helps Members understand what you do and what your focus is; But if you have multiple target markets maybe switch between them at different meetings. I also like providing snippets of information that people don’t know in my Member Minutes and spotlight presentations as well.

Tips on how Members can be more successful in Caerusnet? Show up! Practice your Member Minute outside and inside the Caerusnet Meetings. Caerusnet is a safe place to network. We want you to practice with us! Some Members may not be really good at elevator pitches and showing confidence with public speaking, we as Facilitators (or other Members) can help. Pay attention and listen to your teammates. Don’t just play on your phone, check emails, and text messages. It’s only an hour! Basically it’s a sales appointment where you are making yourself available for referrals. A fantastic way to grow your business!

What is it about facilitating a referral team that you hope to accomplish, professionally? As a Facilitator I hope to add value to my Members businesses. Everyone wants referrals whether they know how to grow by referral or not. I hope to teach my Members at every meeting at least one thing they can take with them that will help their individual business grow, and the team as a whole. I want to give back and give each of my Members referrals, growing myself as a referral master as well! I try to take one thing from every meeting to help grow their businesses. We all have room to grow. If we’re not growing … we’re falling behind!

  • Jimmie Plaskey Suits Up For Referrals!

By Steven Zyskowski, President of Caerusnet

As a former college football player, Jimmie Plaskey understands the concept of teamwork.  When Jimmie recognized he could harness his leadership skills as an up and coming financial adviser to run his own referral passing team in the city of Brighton, he suited up for the game!  And while Jimmie is a successful, young adviser, and his referral team is steadily growing, he’s still a student of the process also as an active Member of the Brighton Wed 10AM team.

I had a chance to interview Jimmie recently to get his take on the world of referrals …
How long have you been in your profession?

I’ve been with Executive Wealth Management since 2011.
How did you get into this field?

Quite a round about way. But long story short, I started as an intern in 2011 and fell in love with the industry and started full time at EWM in 2013.  I’ll take it one step further and tell you why I got into this field.  I believe in educating, inspiring, and creating a peace of mind. I believe that those are informed make better lasting financial decisions. I believe this because of my unique history through the market recession of 2008 with a financial professional giving my family the easy answer and not the right answers. I help others through building a structurally sound financial plan that is well maintained on a regular basis.

What is the best thing about your business/career?
    Positively impacting my client’s lives.

What is it about the Caerusnet model that you like most?
It’s not what I like most about the Caerusnet model … it’s what I appreciate most about it. I appreciate the atmosphere. I appreciate the understanding of busy schedules and last minute appointments. I appreciate that as a Member, I just need to worry about my business and as a Facilitator, all of my Members aren’t looking to take on my responsibilities they are there to share and sell their businesses. I appreciate that this weekly networking group meets around 30 weeks per year and takes time off around the summer and holidays.

Any tips on learning how to find situations where you can create a referral or invite a visitor?
Yes! When I first started in financial planning, in my client meetings, I was so worried about the plan and finance aspect that I failed to mention and even think about referrals. I created a one-page document that listed out all of the types of businesses I was comfortable referring that I now give to every client in every meeting. It’s become one of the important aspect to my business.

Any tips on how to be successful in Caerusnet?
Being successful in Caerusnet is simple. It’s a simple as the old proverb states, “The best things in life happen outside of your comfort zone”. Upon joining Caerusnet as a Member in 2015, I was very out of my comfort zone having to speak in front of a group of people and 3 years later I’m facilitating a group! Here are my tips in no specific order:

    Go the extra mile.

Make sure you attend all possible meetings, especially on the days when you’re feeling lazy and really don’t want to get up and go.

    Do the Trust Builder Meetings!

Get to really know the other Members of your group. It will not only help you get to know them, but it will greatly increase your “refer-ability”.

    Practice

Have a very polished Member minute. This is your 60 second commercial!

    Be authentic

You’re in Caerusnet for a reason; you care about your business, want to establish and build a network, and turn ultimately increase profit. Be yourself. When thinking about prospects that may do business with you remember this; “Some will, some won’t, so what.

Make sure the Members of the group know you are authentic and genuine.

What is it about facilitating a referral team that you hope to accomplish, professionally?
I want to build a network of a solid group of professionals that are energized and hungry to build their businesses. I want to have THAT Caerusnet team, the team that has a waiting list to get in. As a private wealth advisor, I passionately care about my clients and their well being. I want to ensure that all referrals I pass to my clients are professionals that I genuinely know, like, and trust.

  • POWERFUL Referral Language – Eavesdrop On This Conversation!

POWERFUL, polite and suggestive canned phrases is how “the pros” purposefully cultivate a referral mindset and increase their referrals with their customers and local referral partners.

Eavesdrop on this fun and informative conversation between Caerusnet Brighton Wednesday 1PM team Member and online marketing specialist, Spencer Field (https://orangecubegroup.com/) and Steven Zyskowski, founder of Caerusnet and active referral team Facilitator.  This powerful six minute VIDEO is critical to watch for anyone who wishes to grow by referral at the local level.
