What are the main reasons most local professionals consider joining a facilitated referral network like Caerusnet?   They want opportunities for their business to get exposure.  Most also want to make new, long-term connections in the local business community. They hope to emerge as a trusted resource amongst others.  In addition, most professionals would like to get referrals from their network, as other professionals get to know, like, and trust them. Some join because they have a nice pipeline of prospects, and they are looking to add value to their own customer relationships by giving their clients helpful referrals when in need.

Over the past 16 years that I have owned Caerusnet, I have noticed that not everyone gets the same results, no matter their profession.  While our facilitators are here to deeply support member success in our beloved facilitated referral network, the responsibility for that success lands in the lap of the individual member.

No matter what your profession is, it is a certain type of person that gets referrals.  The ones who get referrals have difference-maker qualities.  I first got exposure to the term “difference maker” from my dear friend, sales coach, and Caerusnet member, Jason Tracey, while listening to his valuable and insightful Coffee & Grit podcast.

In my observation, here are the most common traits of Caerusnet’s difference makers:

    MINDSET CHOICE
They made the right choice in mindset between service-to-others vs service-to-self.  Why should people refer clients to them?  Especially, if they are in a field where there is serious competition like real estate, financial advising, insurance, home services, etc. Service to self is always putting one’s own needs above all others. People who are service-to-self operate with the mindset of “when I get what I want, then maybe I will help others get what they want.”  This clearly the wrong mindset choice that sabotages your one to build mutually beneficial referral relationships! Service-to-others is the correct mindset to have.  “How can I add value to my client, friends and family relationships?” is how difference-makers think. Difference makers believe that if they help enough people get what they want, then they will also get what they want.”   Because of this mindset, I will offer that difference-makers know that in a fun way, service-to-others is honorable service-to-self.

    POSITIVE PRESENCE
Anyone can complain but difference makers focus their energies on creative brainstorming and are experts at finding solutions, not pointing out obvious problems. They make their presence felt by leaving everything better than the condition they found them in. They improve the lives of the people they come across and make the organizations they are a part of better, simply because they are present in the presence of others.  They are interested in the people in their network and ask questions. Most importantly, they listen to the answers they are given vs. formulating a response in their minds as their listening.   Every day is a present when you are a difference maker – because difference makers are always present when they are with others.

    CONSISTENT GOOD ACTIONS
Difference makers do not live in the world of good intentions.  They live in the world of good actions. They take their network of referral partners with them subconsciously when they are in their regular course of business activity, always looking for opportunities to make referrals.  Many Caerusnet difference-makers love to be the first member to give a new member of a team their very first referral!  Taking good actions, multiplied consistently over time, will result in getting some of the best, warmed up reciprocal referrals one could ever ask for.  If a person is not getting referrals in Caerusnet, the questions a member should ask themselves are: “Who have I really helped lately?”  “Who have I really gone to bat for?”  “Are the referrals I’m giving others adding value to their business?”

MINDSET CHOICE. POSITIVE PRESENCE. CONSISTENT GOOD ACTIONS.
This is the honest and honorable approach to relationship and referral success that Caerusnet difference-makers embrace. As a result, they are getting what they want in our facilitated referral network.

  • Caerusnet Is Celebrating 15 Years In Business!

Caerusnet Is Celebrating 15 Years In Business!

Caerusnet is proudly celebrating its 15th year in business!  What a journey it has been since first starting the business in Brighton, MI, in 2008.  And my how the world has changed since.  Yet, regardless of our constantly changing world, Caerusnet is nimble and responsive to the needs of today’s small business professionals, service providers, start-ups and solopreneurs.  I truly feel our network attracts the best quality members and I thank you all deeply for your support.

A little history on how I got here as the founder of Caerusnet.  Back in 2006, I was the owner of a mortgage brokerage in Livingston County and had spent many years supporting BNI.  I helped start many BNI teams in the area back then, including one of the largest in Michigan, where I served as a founding member, president, educational coordinator, and in the end, a membership committee member.  For me, BNI was huge time and financial commitment and many members found themselves burning out, including myself.  While it was mostly a positive experience for me (especially as a networking newbie) it ended horribly.  Due to member politicking and shenanigans, I was blackballed and kicked off the team I helped start and put my heart into.  I was devastated and was left alienated and heartbroken.  As they say “that which doesn’t kill us, often makes us stronger”.  And that was the case with me.

At the same time as my membership with that referral organization came to an end, my then wife also let me know she was filing for divorce.  Then, the financial collapse of 2007/2008 kicked in, and I had to also close my mortgage company, which I started with my best friend from back in my college fraternity days.  We were not able to keep our friendship in tact and he moved to Denver, Colorado.

To say 2007 was a difficult year for me would be a true understatement.  I lost virtually everything that was important to me, outside of my two children, who were most important to me.  I was forced to take deep and honest looks at myself to figure out what I had done wrong, could have done differently, and wouldn’t do again.

A good friend of mine, Chuck Dodge, said to me “Steve, things don’t happen to us in life.  They happen for us.”  How right Chuck is.  Without all these things that had happened to me, Caerusnet would have never been created.  To this day, I’m very grateful to BNI, my ex-wife, my ex-best friend and for closing my mortgage company.  For without those events happening, Caerusnet may have never been created.  And today, I’m one of the happiest, most content people I know.  There’s something to be said for being able to face adversity and going after your dreams.

The 2020 pandemic also changed the face of Caerusnet.  We are no longer simply an in-person referral team experience.  We’ve also been able to excel at offering online teams.  As a result of the online experience, I was able to move to sunny southern Arizona and now manage my Caerusnet practice from there.  I cherish my annual return trip to Michigan in July so I can connect with Caerusnet members in person for private appointments, as well as with an extremely energetic audience at the annual Caerusnet breakfast.

Here is a short list of things I’m proud of from the first 15 years in Caerusnet that immediately come to mind:

Over 80,000 documented referrals passed and counting, between the members of the six teams I personally facilitate in Brighton, Ann Arbor & Canton.

Close to 25 Caerusnet teams in Michigan facilitated by wonderful professionals who are delivering the Caerusnet culture to their members.

Approximately 350 Caerusnet members who all take the concept of “know, like & trust” to heart.

ReferralTopia, which is Caerusnet’s signature online professional development and networking event, is now in its fourth year of production.  Think of ReferralTopia as a giant-sized Caerusnet members meeting, which is also open to the general Michigan business community.  Past events have gone so well, this year we are doing two of them in 2023 (March & October)!

The Caerusnet golf outing, which is currently organized by Wendy Caverly, who facilitates five Caerusnet teams.  This event is a great way to go into the fall every year.

The Caerusnet Podcast, now in its second year.  I absolutely love talking with Caerusnetters about their individual experiences and share their words of wisdom to benefit the entire network.

A fantastic website that is colorful, functional, and constantly improving.

So, while I’m very thrilled to be celebrating 15 years of Caerusnet being in business, I’m already eyeing the 20-year mark, and am continually making improvements to our network.  My ask is that we all raise our standards a little bit higher and make 2023 the year we all do more to help others.  After all, if you help others get what they want in life, there’s a great chance that you’ll have what you want, too.  At our team meetings, aim high to have at least one referral, one visitor, or schedule one trust builder meeting.  Trust Builders can be with members of your own Caerusnet team or members from other teams.  After all, we are an open team network where members know members from Caerusnet teams all across Michigan.

“One To Win” is my motto again in 2023 (this saying was also my 2021 motto).  One is simple.  One is necessary.  If we all give one, we will all win.  Thank you for your support in helping make Caerusnet the special network that it is.

    Stay connected,

The Caerusnet PODCAST – A Great Tool For Sharing & Learning

Do you like to take your headphones with you when you go for nice walk or workout at the gym?  How about that windshield time in the car?  Podcasts are super popular these days as people can discover amazing content that you simply just won’t find in the legacy media.  For the past many years, I’ve discovered some great podcasts from Caerusnet members.

These podcasts are with the people I care about and the benefits of learning from people you know, like and trust is immeasurable.  Personally, I’d like to mention just a few podcasts that I’m a big fan of.  They are the “So, you’re in sales?” podcast by Caerusnet member, Roger Burnett.  His podcasts are very structured and fit well within a 30 min walk or drive most of the time.  Also, I’m a big fan of Brighton Wednesday 10AM Caerusnet member Jason Tracey from Roar Consulting.  Jason’s podcasts on “Coffee & Grit” are very free flow, like a Joe Rogan Experience and you never know where they’re going to go.  Jason is great and helping people share their vulnerabilities.  And also, Caerusnetters, Anglea and Don Putkela, and their real estate podcast, “Welcome to Livingston” is super great!

In 2022, I’m proud to also introduce The Caerusnet Podcast.  I hope you will consider adding this to your Spotify favorites!  What could be better than learning how to grow by referral than by learning from our Caerusnet peers?  The first five episodes of are ready right now for your listening enjoyment!  The episodes feature some cool, unique Caerusnet members.  Also, learning from top performers and learning from the 2021 Caerusnet Team MVPs (20+ of them join us in one podcast) who authentically share their Caerusnet experience and tips for success with the entire network.

  • Coach Evan Has A Healthy Referral Mindset In Caerusnet

Coach Evan Has A Healthy Referral Mindset In Caerusnet

As a Member of the Caerusnet Canton team, Evan Raoof is passionate about helping his clients train for the performance of their lives.  He helps his clients
understand how to approach fitness in a way they can successfully adopt into their lives to become a meaningful part of their daily living.  We had a chance to connect with Evan to learn more about him and get his take on the world of referrals!

How did you get into this field?   I have always been into to exercise and truly, exercise saved my life.  I was born with a type of Cerebral Palsy that impacts a portion of the right side of my body (leg and arm).  When attending summer camp at age nine, I didn’t wear my brace for three months.  I was faced with walking the right way or being in a wheelchair.  We all have a story that allows us to be who we are. In adversity comes strength and will to create happiness.

How are you different and/or what’s your niche?  I love the opportunity to help someone get healthy though fitness. My business has transformed me from being simply a personal trainer to also a lifestyle mindset coach. The truth about weight loss and your life is that it is not actually about weight loss sometimes.  It is the relationship with yourself first and to others -family and friends. It’s all connected.  At FitLiving Academy, I help clients achieve much more than health.  I have recently started implementing weight loss and wellness programs into other health related practices and am excited to create such possibilities to impact more people. This helps be broaden the scope of referrals I can create for our clients in all aspects related to fitness, health and wellness.

Evan being interviewed by Jason Tracey, Roar Consulting.

Share a success story about why giving referrals/bringing visitors are beneficial to you.  The mindset of giving will come back to you 10 x!  It took about 8 months to become the “know, like, trust” person and to get a referral from the team – yet that referred client is still paying me monthly. Months later, a Member referred someone who had money saved in a flex spending account without and they invested that with me to start a four-month health program. I value every relationship and take a stand for my clients results Referrals make it easier.

Any tips on learning how to find situations where you can create a referral or invite a visitor?   The power is in the Trust Builder Meetings with Caerusnet Members.
As I connect with people I want to help make introductions for, I invite them to visit Caerusnet, where they can meet 25-30 of my powerful referral partners.

What is your approach to positioning yourself as a resource in the community?  I want to be known as a resource for all things related to fitness, health, and wellness. Caerusnet

is critical in helping get connected to the right people to help me get the word out.

Tips on how to be successful in Caerusnet?  Steve Zyskowski runs a fantastic organization with a lot different teams – each with a unique culture, yet they all speak the same language. Visit each team in your area or territories and expand your network.  Treat it like an interview. Because it is! Build relationships based on wanting to help others and serving your customers by being a great referral source.  Plan on entertaining and educating.  Each Member minute is an opportunity to educate, engage and connect with all Members of the Caerusnet team. Educate your Members in your Member Minute, Spotlight Presentation, and the important Trust Builder Meetings.
